KATANGA CLASH
Drive On Balubas
ELISABETHVILLE, Feb. 12.
The Katanga Army and Air Force have launched “their biggest offensive ever” against the pro-Lumumbist Balubas in the Mukulakulu area of central Katanga, an Army spokesman announced today. i “More than 1200 men are now taking part in the operations against the Balubas south of Mukulakulu,” he said.
“The attacks began on Thursday night when infantry and units of armoured jeeps moved north from Lubudi to seize a river crossing over the Kabub river.
The spokesman said the Balubas had been using French-made cartridges in rifles and machine-guns and in rifle grenades. He hinted that these came from Moroccan United Nations troops who had been stationed in the Luena area.
The spokesman said: “Rebels cut the railway south of Luena yesterday and a train was derailed, injuring five people. Our operations are designed to open the railway again as well as clearing the area of rebels. U.N. Plane Hit
A C-46 transport plane carrying several Irish members of the United Nations force was hit by gunfire during a flight from Kamina, a United Nations spokesman announced last night. One bullet pierced the main petrol tank, but the plane reached Elisabethville safely
