Mr Kinsella’s Visit

To City

Experimental television programmes should be started in Christchurch about the middle of this year, the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Kinsella) said in Christchurch yesterday Mr Kinsella was injecting possible sites in the city for a transmitter and a studio. It was his first official visit to the city. Mr Kinsella said that the visit was to familiarise himself with the possibilities and have a background knowledge when future moves were planned. The purpose of the visit was not to decide the site.

Sites inspected included Sugar Loaf Hill (1600 ft and Marleys Hill (1200 ft >. The cost of installing the 100-kilo-watt transmitter could not be given at this stage. Three-quarters of the equipment for the setting up on an experimental station has arrived in Christchurch and Is being installed. A 15-acre site at Halswell road for the stutfio was also inspected.

Mr Kinsella said that the latest equipment was being introduced into New Zealand Video machines which recorded sound as well as pictures were being introduced. Only an experimental colour television broadcast had operated in Britain and Japan. In Britain a recommendation that it be dropped had been made.
