Swimming One Canterbury Win At N.Z. Championships

“The Press’' Special Service

TAURANGA, Feb. 10.

Canterbury swimmers were again disappointing when the New Zealand championship meeting was continued in Tauranga today. C. McFadden won the harbour swim, but no successes were recorded in the pool events, though second and third placings continued to come Canterbury’s way. M. Hay, after qualifying first in the boys’ 100 yards breaststroke, was again beaten into second place in the final. His time of Imin 15.6 sec was not far outside his national record, but G. Ruzio-Saban (Auckland) won in a new record time. Hay, like Miss S. Nicholson, seems worti out after early-season training and the Queensland tour. A. Macdonald swam well to take third position, and showed that he likes the shorter distances. M. Major (Ashburton) who qualified for the final after a for last place, improved remarkably to finish fourth. This was a good effort considering that he had already swum the distance twice during the day. Miss Nicholson, fourth in her heat of the women’s 100 yards freestyle, very nearly beat Miss L. Moore (Wellington), also a 16-year-old, in the final. Miss Moore had her third win in the women’s freestyle events. This feat was last achieved in 1949 by Miss B. Casey, of Wellington. Miss Nicholson was placed second by inches, and her time was only O.lsec slower. This was a magnificent race, with Miss Nicholson surprising over the short distance.

G. Dann swam a good race to finish second to P. Hatch (Wellington) in the men’s 100 yards freestyle. Hatch set a new national record of 52,65ec. beating the time set by D. Ramsay three years ago. Dann was I.3sec away from the old record. R. Taylor (Auckland) set a fantastic new national junior 220 yards record when he won in 2min 16.6 sec. G. Stringer (Canterbury) holds the national time of 2min 21.8 sec, not yet ratified, but Taylor cut s.2sec off this time in two swims. Stringer finished third. Canterbury had another third placing in the women’s medley relay. Misses L. Harrow (freestyle), Nicholson (butterfly), S. Pitama (backstroke) and C. Hopper (breaststroke) were in the Canterbury team. The winning Auckland team was Misses B. Nicholls, M. Phillips, L. Norman, and K. Sawyers. Canterbury’s hopes In the men’s 100 yards freestyle suffered a set-back shortly before the start of the morning session when G. Le Cren dislocated a thumb in a scuffle with northern swimmers. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
