BEST STREET COMPETITION

Judges Note ' Improvement

All the winning streets in the Christchurch Beautifying

Association’s annual street competition show considerable improvement from last year, according to the two judges (Messrs G. G. Henderson, assistant director of reserves, and E. Taylor, landscape architect), who announced the results for 1961 yesterday afternoon.

With a total of 90 marks from a possible 100, the winning street, Royds street. Fendalton, gained the highest marks ever awarded in this competition, said the judges. Although well planned individually, some of the entrants had not shown enough continuity through the whole street, they said.

This was a special point for residents to remember. Both Royds street and the winner of the second place in the premier award (Koromiko street, St. Martins) had presented a planned effect throughout. The organiser of the competition (Mr W. E. Turland) said that it had been a “wonderful community effort,” with the winners coming from totally different areas of the city. It was particularly notable that all the main winners had formed their own street committee to arrange their entry and had shown an excellent example of community spirit.

The judges’ choices were made on the following point allocation system.—Community effort, 50; general effect, 30; street embellishments, 20; a total of 100 possible marks. Results:—

Premier street of Christchurch, Royds street (90) 1. Koromiko street —portion from St. Martins road (87) 2, Hinemoa street, Spreydon (83), 3. District Results WaimaSf' District.—Royds street (90) 1, Wayside avenue (74) 2. Joyce crescent (70) 3. Beckenham, Opawa, Woolston. St Martins.—Koromiko street (87) 1, Ryan street (78) 2.
