Hodge And Miss Hutton Lead

“The Press" Special Service TAURANGA, February 9. Canterbury divers—the 1958 Empire Games representative. R * L - Hodge, and Miss Helen Hutton—gained most points in the compulsory section of the New Zealand springboard championship at Te Puke today. Canterbury had no divers in the junior boys’ and girls’ events, also begun today. R. Hood, the Waikato men’s champion, came to Te Puke determined to achieve his ambition, the defeat of Hodge, but confidence let him down. In attempting too much on his first dive he misjudged to such a degree that Hodge, with his first dive, had little trouble in doubling Hood’s score.

Hodge, however, electing for all five dives the straight or A position, was pushed hard to retain his lead and Increased his lead on Hood by less than one point during the fol” remaining dives.

Miss Hutton, appearing in a shimmering blue costume, dived with all grace, but she was prob* ably lucky that the former Aucklander. Miss Patsy Plowman who had been entered, did not arrive In Tauranga from Australia, where she has been living recently.
