Garden Competitions

Sir, —I would be interested to see the comments of Christchurch Beautifying Association judges on the standards by which they choose “best gardens.” All praise to those who enter these competitions and enhance our city. But is it essentia! that, to win, gardens must be so horribly formal with pink dahlias, blue lobelias, and some silverleafed plants? Floral arrangement today favours informality. Modern garden design overseas favours using natural contours. How would undulating lawns and lop-sided plantings fare under our judges?— Yours, etc., INTERESTED. February 7, 1961. [The convener of the judging panel (Mr A. J. Dewar) said the writer should attend the Christchurch Beautifying Association's prize - giving ceremony, where he could hear the judges’ comments and discuss his views with them.]
