DIPLOMATIC POSTS

Announcement This Month?

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 8. The Prime Minister (Mr Hoiyoake) told a press conference today he had run into some unexpected difficulties in making appointments to overseas posts. But, he said, he had made some real progress since the Cabinet discussed overseas appointments on Monday. Replying to reporters’ questions, the Prime Minister said he expected to announce some diplomatic appointments before he left for London at the end of this month.

“I realise there is expectation of some statement from me on the whole question of overseas appointments. But there are certain difficulties which preclude me making a full statement yet,” Mr Hoiyoake added.

Besides the vacant London and Washington posts the Government has to consider the posts of High Commissioner in Australia, where Mr F. Jones’s term will expire this month, and the High Commissioner in Malaya, where Mr C. Bennett’s term will expire next month.
