RUGBY IN MALAYA

Win For 2nd Battalion

[Army Information Service] SINGAPORE. Jan. 31

The 2nd Battalion retained the Army Rugby crown in Malaya after defeating the First Royal Australian Regiment 10-0 at Taiping today. Played in torrid conditions the game way unspectacular until the last 10 minutes when two tries were scored and converted. Play in the first half involved a mighty forward battle, but it was anyone’s game at that stage.

New Zealand kept Australia on the defensive during the second half but it was not until 10 minutes from the final whistle that Private Sommerville, playing lock, burst over for a try which he then converted. The Canterbury representative, Second Lieutenant Toby Nicholson, who recently joined the battalion, scored a beautiful try from the wing just before time, Sommerville converting.
