Athletics PENTATHLON AT AUCKLAND
NX Record Set By Mrs Mclntosh (N.Z. Press Association) . AUCKLAND. January 31. i Scoring well in four of the ’ five events, the New Zealand I 'BO metres hurdler. Mrs Avis ! Mclntosh, gained a New Zeai land record total of 4084 points in wining the Auckland pentathlon championship which was concluded at Olympic Stadium today. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has set a I standard of 4000 points for I recognition of a record, and ; Auckland centre officials will | apply for this performance of I Mrs Mclntosh to be accepted |as a national record. The best individual effort of* ! the combined decathlon- ! pentathlon meeting was a run of 11.2 sec by Mrs Mclntosh in the 80 metres hurdles to clip .Isec off her existing Auckland mark. This was only .Isec slower than the New Zealand record of 11.Isec held by the Olympic and Empire Games representative. Miss Margaret Stuart. It gained a total of 1011 points for Mrs Mclntosh. The defending champion. Miss Jill Heatley. a former national title-holder, was second with 3939. and Miss Fay Funnel! third with 3544. Dropping 200 points through head winds in his first two events today the national decathlon champion and record-holder, R. Williams, admitted to losing interest in any attempt on his New Zea- . land and Auckland total of 6052 points. He was content to ease his way through the rest . of the 10 events and keep ■ ahead of his challengers. Williams was never seriously threatened for the lead, ; and nis final total of 5615 was . 041 ahead of his nearest rival. : R. D. Pope.
