Inconsiderate Climbers
Perhaps the most tragic fact of mountaineering is that lives are often lost in searching for missing climbers. Recently preparations were made at Mount Cook to search for three persons thought to be overdue at the Fox Glacier. To everybody’s relief it was established that the climbers had crossed safely to the West Coast, but had failed to notify The Hermitage as they had promised. This kind of
neglect by climbing parties is unsportsmanlike at best and highly dangerous at worst. Even if conduct such as this could be made punishable at law, no-one would want to regulate the sport of mountaineering in this way. Inconsiderate, irresponsible climbers can probably be disciplined best through the various mountaineering clubs, upon which fall many of the burdens of searching for missing persons.
