ARCHITECTS AND ARTISTS.—Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright, three of the greatest names in twentieth century architecture, are the subjects of Peter Blake's “Master Builders,” published by Gollancz. In an absorbing story, Mr Blake brings out the significance of the three, not only as architects but as artists, and to their artistry he attributes their tremendous influence on the building of the age. The three pictures give an example of the work of each of Mr Blake’s subjects. At top left is Le Corbusier’s apartment block at Marseilles. The building, a gigantic concrete city on sculptured stilts, has two shopping streets half way up. and elaborate communal facilities on the roof. Below is one of the best known of Frank Lloyd Wright’s works—Kaufmann House, Bear Run, Pennsylvania. This dramatic structure is cantilvered out over a natural waterfall. The core of the house is a rocky ledge which forms the hearth of the fireplace. The picture above shows apartment houses at Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, designed by Mies van der Rohe.
