RELIEF IN NELSON

Welcome Fall Of Rain (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, January 17. Rain fell last night throughout most of the Nelson Province, bringing a welcome relief to land parched by weeks of almost continual sunshine. The fall ranged from just over an inch in the west of the province to round 0.60 in along the coast. In Nelson city, the water position remains serious, with total hosing restrictions in force. The Brook street reservoir is only one-third full, and requires 10.000.000 gallons of water before conditions can return to normal. In Murchison, where only a trace fell overnight, household supplies of water are gettine dangerously low. The rain will be of considerable benefit to tobacco growers, but is too late to be of much use to the hop crop. It has alleviated dangerous conditions at the Rai and Golden Downs State forests, and has enabled the Forest Service to concentrate added fire fighters in the Reefton area.
