LADY HILLARY’S EXPEDITION
Ship With Gear Delayed (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 17. Delay in the sailing of the freighter Wairata for Calcutta has delayed Lady Hillary’s expedition to the Himalayas by about 10 days. Leaving New Zealand by air on February 15 for Katmandu, Lady Hillary and Mrs Peter Mulgrew, who with a party of four others plan to walk 170 miles to Thangboche in the high Himalayas, planned to have their gear arrive ahead of them by sea. But delays will mean that the Wairata will not arrive at Calcutta until February 19 or 20.
The gear on board includes not only that for Lady Hillary’s expedition but also for the expedition of her husband, Sir Edmund Hillary, who intends climbing Makalu in the Himalayas without oxygen.
