VAN CARRIED 100 YARDS
Caught In Ford In Flood (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 17. An Auckland man and two boys escaped unscathed when their van hurtled a hundred yards down a flood-swollen creek two miles from Kennedy’s Bay. Coromandel, early this morning. Brian Carrick, aged about 35, Michael de Lellis, aged 13. and Peter Simpson, returning from a Coromandel cinema show to their camping ground at Kennedy’s Bay, negotiated one river ford successfully and were confident of crossing the next one. Halfway across the van shuddered against the pressure of a raging torrent of water four feet deep. Then suddenly it skidded across the concrete surface of the ford and over a four-foot ledge. The van remained on four wheels as it was swept down stream for a hundred yards The boys jumped out and battled their way to the bank. Just before the van
toppled over. Mr Carrick jumped out and dragged himself ashore.
