Although motor races have been held on the Wigram circuit since 1949, only since 1954 have the events carried international status. There was no racing in 1955 because of resealing of the tarmac. Since 1949, the average speeds of the circuit have risen from the 66 miles an hour of Maurice Proctor in 1949 to the scorching 90.3 miles an hour of the Cooper Climax driven by Jack Brabham last year. Previous winners of the races at Wigram before international status was granted were:— 1949: (105.8 miles) M. Proctor (Wellington), Brooklands Riley, 66.17 miles an hour. 1950: (105.8 miles) Hector Green (Christchurch), Wolseley Special. 69.79 miles an hour. 1951: (101.57 miles) L. Moore (Christchurch) P 3 Alfa Romeo, 69.5 miles an hour.
