RACING Braganza In Good Trial At Trentham

"'Tile Press'' Special Service

WELLINGTON. Jan. 17. Even Steven* advanced in favour for the Gloaming Stakes, on the second day of the Wellington meeting, after a solid mile trial at Trentham this morning. Braganza also worked well over this distance, although he was not asked for an effort UH near the half-mile. The two-year-olds Four Winds and Good Day Peter, and Lord Nikita recorded the best sprints. Light rain, whipped by a strong northerly wind, fell during training, but it did not affect the outside of the course proper where galloping took place. The going was fast. Even Stevens (Mudford) led Marendellas (Smith) in the early stages of a mile, but Marendellas ran strongly in the final furlong and they passed the post on terms. They recorded Imin 44 3-ssec, the last half in 52sec and the final three furlongs in 38sec. At his last start Even Stevens won the Queen's Hack Plate at Ellerslie in a manner which suggested he would master the extra distance of Saturday's event Marendellas will return north to contest the Fred Hosking Handicap at the Franklin meeting. He has done well since being at Trentham. BRAGANZA FIT Braganza (Stokes) travelled at three-quarter pace from the mile to the half and sprinted from there in 50 4-ssec. the final three furlongs taking 36 4-ssec. He will have his first start at the meeting in the January Handicap and on

this morning’s work he should have good prospects.

Lord Nikita (Thornton) worked keenly over half a mile in 49 3-ssec, coming from the three furlongs in 36 l-ssec. He is a newcomer in the Douro Hack Handicap, but he would need to improve on his latest efforts to have prospects. Down the chute Four Winds .Eastwood) and Good Day Peter (Blucher) ran five furlongs. the last four in 48 4-ssec. Four Winds has done well since he opened his account on the first day of the Wairarapa meeting. Good Day Peter is a promising juvenile. He has had only two starts, for a second in the Paterangi Foal Stakes at the Waipa meeting on Christmas Eve, and a win tn the Midsummer Handicap at Ellerslie when he disposed of a good field including Cavaliet and Seasonal. On those efforts he may be hard to beat in the Nursery Handicap. Revolver (Simpson) and Senor (McLiesh) completed pacework with an easy three furlongs in 44sec. Senor. a winner in high-weight company on the first day, will tackle the top three-year-olds in the Gloaming Stakes. Marengo (Sargent) ran half a mile easily in 55sec, taking 40sec for the final three furlongs. At his last start Marengo was the pacemaker in the Bowen Handicap at Ellerslie. but weakened to fifth His prospects in the Metropolitan Handicap on Saturday are highly regarded by northern visitors. Newmarket (Wilson) was doing better than Rifleman (Smith) throughout six furlongs. coming from the four in 52 2-ssec and from the three in 38see. TAKEN NO HARM

Cadiz (Stokes) was not after time while running three furlongs in 38sec. He has taken no harm from his outing in the Telegraph Handicap. to which he made ground for fourth He drew wide in the Metropolitan Handicap and has been scratched.
