CAR STRIKES BRIDGE

Driver Escapes Uninjured

A car travelling south across the Ashburton river bridge crashed into the protective railings at the southern approach about 8 p.m. yesterday, after getting out of control on the wet, smooth roadway. The car tore down 30ft of railing, coming to rest with its front wheels well over the steep bank of the bridge approach. The car was extensively damaged, with the front badly smashed and twisted, and every window broken, but the driver was not injured. There were no passengers in the car.

Mr G. Glassey, of Tinwald. a member of the Ashburton Borough Council, was on the scene immediately after the accident and directed traffic past the car until the police arrived. Constables B. E. Fairbrass and R. Hickman kept a continual stream of cars flowing across the bridge by way of the stock route until a breakdown truck had towed the damaged car out of the way.
