Trade Talks With Malaya

WELLINGTON, Jan. 17. “Malaya and New Zealand will commence negotiations in Wellington on January 26 with a meeting of officials to be followed by ministerial discussions, with a view to concluding a trade agreement between the two countries,” said the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) today. The Malayan delegation will be headed by the Minister of Commerce and Industry (Inche Mahomed Khir Bin Johari), who will be accompanied by four officials. Mr Sujak Bin Rahiman. controller of the Trade Division, Ministry of Commerce and Industry: Mr Lew Sip Hon, controller of the Export Commodities Division, Ministry of ■ Commerce and Industry; Mr Abdullah Bin Ali, assistant
secretary (economics). External Affairs Department, and one official from the Ministry of Finance.
At the official level the New Zealand delegation will include Mr M. J. Moriarty, assistant secretary, Department of Industries and Commerce; Mr J. Shepherd, of the External Affairs Department; Mr A. C. Shailes, of the Treasury, and Mr T. T. P. Lockwood, of the Customs Department.
Mr Marshall said that it was expected that 1960 exports to Malaya would be worth about £400,000 against imports, of
about £2,000,000. The major export item is dairy products for which market prospects were promising, but there were also worthwhile sales of fruit, tallow and some other items.
While trada was dominated by rubber products on the import side, Malaya was an important source of supply for tin, hardwood and a range of smaller items.
“I believe that a satisfactory trade agreement can be negotiated and that it will result in an expansion of trade to the mutual advantage of both countries,” said Mr Marshall.
