SCIENTISTS IN ANTARCTIC

Party Marooned In Blizzard (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, January 3. A party of five Australian scientists were recently marooned for a week in an icy Antarctic blizzard, according to a report received today from the Wilkes Station. The party has returned to the base after a month in the field when it encountered four blizzards, the report says. Snow vehicles were used to penetrate 230 miles towards the Antarctic plateau and at the farthest point inland, the party encountered the land of the midnight sun. Magnetic storms and cloud caused a six-day radio blackout with their base. All the men lost weight during the expedition. At times temperatures dropped as low as minus 59 degrees Fahrenheit, but the party returned to base in good spirits after completing scientific work.
