DIVER TRAPPED BY MUD
Struggle To Reach Buoy Line (New Zeaiana Press Association) BLENHEIM. January 3. Trapped in mud 140 feet below salvage vessels off Allport Island, Queen Charlotte Sound, a Blenheim skin diver struggled for his life on Saturday. In muddy darkness one flipper was engulfed to the ankle and one knee was firmly stuck in the gluey grey pug bottom. The diver, lan Kenny, of Blenheim, was saved by a buoy line to the surface marking the salvage site. He found it just within reach and he was able to pull himself free. Mr Kenny was attempting to locate a bulldozer, tractor, and other equipment lost off Allport Island the previous Saturday when a punt transporting them down the sounds foundered. The salvage attempt was unsuccessful. A Timaru fishing trawler, Norseman, owned by Captain J. Inkster, had earlier located some object on the bottom with its echo sounder and snagged it with a trawl cable. Mr Kenny located a conical shaped metal projection sticking a foot or so above the mud, but was unable to attach a cable. The projection was thought to be part of the bulldozer’s blade lifting mechanism. From the position of the blade, it is presumed, the rest of the machine is below the mud.
