TROTTING ORIENT NIGHT MAY WIN AT GREYMOGTH

Orient Night should end a long list of placings with a first win for the season in the H. W. Kitchingham Handicap, the main race and second leg of the double on the opening day of the Greymouth Trotting Club's summer meeting at Victoria Park tomorrow.

Orient Night has been placed in seven of 13 starts so far this term and with a little luck she would have won before this for her West Coast owner, Mr H. Langridge, and Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt. The four-year-old daughter of Attack finished third in the Mid-summer Handicap at Ashburton and in a division of the Templeton Handicap at Addington last Saturday.

On Monday she was involved in a scrimmage near the half-mile in the Middleton Handicap and was pulled up. With reasonable luck in the running, she should win. Viper, which raced well on the West Coast in the spring, winniag three races, including a sprint at Greymouth in October, showed that he was on the verge of winning form when he finished third to Gatley and Massacre over two miles in the Middleton Handicap at Addington on Monday. Viper is raced and trained by G. Bennett, who won the Greymouth Cup in 1958 with Staraider. The Bennett family has been a consistent supporter of West Coast meetings and their record should be improved by Viper at this meeting. Serpentine gained two wins and tw’o placings from four starts at Greymouth in October. He has not been produced since, but if he comes up as well this week, he should pay expenses. He is a member of W. S. Cummings's Greymouth team and a win for him would be well received.

Racing Well Massacre has raced well in stronger company than he will encounter in this field. His partowner and trainer, D. J. Campbell. raced Bedivug with success at Greymouth a few ago. Massacre recorded a fine trial for thss ra£e when he finished boldly for second to Gatley in the Middleton Handicap at Addington on Monday. He met trouble in a mix-up before the final half-mile and came from a long way back for his placing. He is certain to race prominently on the trip. No Comment, the winner of two races, including the Reefton Cup, on the West Coast holiday circuit, must be given a great chance. He is a promising young pacer. Spring Jinks and Hindu Princess appeal most of the others. Lucks Way, which has had three seconds, two thirds and a fourth from six starts at Westport and Reefton, should go close to winning the first leg, the Victoria Park Hancfccap. He has had some hard racing, but so, too, have most of his rivals in this race. Lucks Way seldom paces a bad race and he will probably be a firm favourite.

Lileas has not raced since she finished second to Resolution in a sprint race at Kaikoura early in November. She has had a chance to freshen up since then and could give a good account of herself. Cushie Doo raced rather disappointingly at Westport and Reefton. but she could do better

on the clay track at Greymouth. She was runner-up to Sanfarer in a sprint at Reefton last Thursday at her most recent start. She should be close to her best now and should be capable of a bold showing. Enrich was a winner in track record time at Reefton and if he begins smoothly, he could lead from end to end. He will be bracketed with Seachase, a winner at Westport. Irish Pal and Young Goughs have raced well lately and they will form a useful bracket for D. G. Nyhan. Along with Thunderbolt and Fiord, they appeal) most of the remainder.
