NEW YEAR TRAFFIC

Behaviour Good New Year traffic in and out of Christchurch did not reach the peak proportions of traffic at Christmas, but traffic officers agreed that motorists* behaviour was of a pleasing standard. Saturday (New Year's Eve) and yesterday were busy days for petrol retailers on the main outlets of Christchurch. Sunday, however, was no busier than normal. North and south-bound traffic on the main North road flowed constantly from morning to late evening yesterday. In a 15-min-ute period in the evening one Belfast resident counted 115 cars travelling along the Main North road.

On the Main South road the volume of traffic was heavy but it did not reach peak proportions at any stage. The busiest time was yesterday afternoon. The Transport Department’s chief traffic officer (Mr E. Wilson) said that no major hold-ups occurred on main roads and the behaviour of motorists was good. On Saturday night several sets of. keys had to be taken from drivers. The microwave speed detector was used on the city's main outlet roads and as a result several charges of speeding had been made, he said. Mr G. P. Kellar, Traffic Superintendent for the Christchurch City Council, said that the public were to be commended thoroughly for their good driving at the week-end. “I was very pleased with traffic behaviour in the city area,” he said.
