Winton

(flew Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. January 2. Although the favourite had a poor innings—Oreti and Flying Fiver were the only two to score in a day of form upsets—the racing at the Winton Trotting Club’s summer meeting on Saturday was always of an interesting standard. The meeting was held in warm weather on a fast track. In winning the Borough Handicap, the three-year-old Master Alan was responsible for a new track record of 3min 33sec tor the mile and five furlongs—a 2min 11 sec mile rate. The off-course double—Oreti and Delinquent—returned £44 7s for £l. The on-course double on the Novice Handicap No. 1 and Improvers’ Handicap No. 1 was won by Etona and True Flight to return £223 10s for £l. The totalisator handled £35.988 compared with £36.045 10s at last year's meeting, a decrease of ✓ £5O 10s. After the running of the Winton Trotting Club Handicap, an inquiry was held into Toka Boy being interfered with after nine furlongs. It was found that Flag Four, which was running near the front of the field, tangled and caused all the horses behind him to be squeezed. This resulted in No Doubt putting his foot through the wheel of Toka Boy’s sulky. After hearing the evidence of the drivers concerned it was decided to take no action other than to warn the trainer of Flag Four that his horse’s manners must be improved.
