85th Annual Caledonian Sports Held At Timaru

TIMARU, January 2. The weather was cool and overcast for the South Canterbury Caledonian Society’s eighty-fifth annual sports meeting at the Caledonian Ground today.

In the final of the half-mile amateur cycling race. N. Fisher, of Timaru, led the field into the back straight. The fastest scratch man away was D. Hillary (Dunedin), who was leading into the home stietch. However, R. Baenesch. of Australia, rode brilliantly to win. In a very close finish to an exciting race. K. Clinch, of Christchurch, won the South Island boys-’ one-mile amateur cycling championship under 16. The winner of the IJ-mile Caledonian wheel race was G. Grant, of Timaru. P. Mora (Christchurch Marist) won the 880 yards men’s amateur handicap, and P. Taylor (Christchurch Technical) finished first in the 100 yards amateur handicap race. A. Potts of Dunedin, sprinted home to win 'the 10-mile modified marathon road race, and to set a new record for the meeting of 50min 41.8 sec. He finished about four minutes in front of J. D. McDonald (Christchurch). B. Cooper. New Zealand University three-mile champion was third. K. Brown (Christchurch) won the South Canterbury Centre Cup awarded for most points in cycling over the four meetings—Waimate, St. Andrews. Temuka and Timaru. C. F.
