SHELL BURSARY AWARDED

Mr J. J. Watts, Of Wellington

A Wellington law student, Mr J. J. Watts, has been awarded the 1961 Shell buisary. Mr Watts is the son of a former Minister of Finance in the National Government CMr J. T. Watts). The bursary, which is tenable for uro years at a university in the United Kingdom, is worth £750 a year and is open to graduates in arts, commerce, or law.

Mr Walts was educated at Christ’s College before going to Victoria University of Wellington, where he completed his bachelor of laws degree last year. He was an outstanding student, being awarded the McCallum Scholarship in law in 1959—the

highest award for undergraduate law students at that stage of the course. His exceptional ability prompted the dean of the faculty of law at Victoria University (Professor I, D. Campbell) to write: "His academic record may be summarised as one of sustained brilliance." At university Mr Watts was a member of the Students’ Association executive and a committee member of the Law Faculty Club. He also played cricket for the university club and was a member of the Christ’s College XI. For the last two years Mr Watts has been employed with the legal firm of Macalister, Mazengarb, Parkin and Rose. Under the terms of the bursary he will join Shell Oil New Zealand, Ltd., early this year. ’He will leave for the United Kingdom in August and he hopes to enter Oxford or Cambridge to take a higher degree in law or a twoyear course in economics.
