EXPLOSION IN MONTREAL

Flats Wrecked By Blast (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) MONTREAL, January 2. An explosion wrecked a twostorey block of flats in Montreal last night, the Canadian Press, reported today. The news agency said firemen feared that seven persons might have been killed. The news agency reported that at least 18 persons were known to have been in the building when it exploded and burned. A dozen ambulances were sent to the area.

Firemen said the explosion was believed to have been caused by gas.

Five residents of the building were taken to hospital. One fireman was injured by falling debris when the building collapsed. “It was fantastic," a neighbour said. “It rocked my whole building and it shattered my front windows.”

Only a few blocks away, in an industrial district near the intersection of Ontario and Papineau, a two-alarm fire was reported to be out of control, the Canadian Preqs reported.
