Barbers’ Towels

Sir, —We learn that in the United States one of our health inspectors found that barbers’ towels, after washing with soap and water, were sterilised. Now for no apparent reason or established need bureaucracy demands the same for New Zealand. Our widely-scattered population is some one-fifth of that of overseas cities about 50 miles across. But the ideas of our non-elected controllers know no such limits. Without any semblance of equity and good conscience Government regulations already force barbers to sell cigarettes below obvious present-day operating costs. Meanwhile living costs soar higher as immigrants take over non-controlled, more profitable trades and retail businesses. In our customary spirit of live and let live hundreds of thousands of voters resent a sequence of walkovers for vendors of Sterilisers and other gadgets. What will elected Ministers dream next as they doze (seemingly) at their desks. Sterilised towels in unsterilised air, or haircuts at thirty bob?—Yours, etc., NEXT NONSENSE PLEASE. January 2, 1961.
