WELLINGTON TITLES

Top Players In Quarter-Finals (New Zealand Press Association) WEULJNGTON, December 27. The top names of New Zealand tennis burst through to enter the quarter-finals of the Wellington championships in a day of thrills and stirring matches today. The- reigning Wellington and New Zealand champion, L. A. Gerrard, smashed his way to an impressive victory over C. G. Judge; B. R. Boon made A. S. Bums fight for every point before he succumbed; R. N. Hawkes overcame F. Scarlett with some fine play and R. G. Clarke and J. B. Souter had surprising hard matches before they entered the final 16. The top Wellington woman, Miss M. Johnstone, defeated the talented Hutt junior, Miss E. Cavaye. after some excellent stroke making. Inspired by his partner. Miss J; Hayvice, Souter recorded the first mixed doubles upset in downing Judge and Miss J. Davidson, to enter the. semi-finals of the event.

Gerrard hit with accuracy and impressive power off the ground in easily disposing of Judge. The Burns-Boon encounter had the crowd on its feet as they drove and parried delicate angles with each other for five wonderful sets. Boon brought off some amazing returns and had his opportunities in the third set, but Burns led two sets to one at the break. Boon fought back to even, but the Aucklander drew on his last reserves to forge ahead in the fifth and final set.

Clarke found O. Henderson a determined retriever, and it was only after some forcing play that he won through in straight sets. Clarke used the match to practise many of his shots and the same could be said for Souter in his singles against R. Purser.

B. E. Woolf hit some powerful ground strokes in the first set of his singles with G. D. Campbell, but Campbell stuck to his guns and forced Woolf to make errors. Coupled with this Campbell took the net often to bury some neat volleys, and though he had the breakthrough in -both the second and third sets, Woolf fought back and won in straight sets.
