Former Slave Dies At 121

CHARLESTON (West Virginia). December 26 William Edward Davis died 15 minutes before Christmas and his one hundred and twenty-second birthday Mr Davis, known ? as “Uncle Dave,” claimed he was born on Christmas Day, 1838. though there was no official record of his birth. •

“Uncle Dave.” who claimed to have been sold in a slave auction at the age of 12, was the oldest man in the nation drawing social security benefits. He said he had been married twice and had had 18 daughters. None are known to survive him.
