RACING W. D. Skelton Engaged For Quick Time

W. D. Skelton, who has ridden four Dunedin Cup winners, more than any other jockey in the history of the race, will ride the Riccarton-trained Quick Time in that race this year. The 1960 Dunedin Cup will be run at Wingatui next Monday.

Skelton did not ride at the Dunedin Cup meeting last year when his brother, R. J. Skelton, won the Cup on Liban.

W. D. Skelton’s Cup winners have been Prawns (1952), Ray Ribbon (1954), Writer (1955) and Canon (1958).

Riders engaged for other Riccarton stayers include C. McDonald on McCool, C. T. Wilson cn Water Boy, and A. H. Eastwood on Quite Able. Water Boy and Quite Able are trained by C. G. Humphries, who rode the 1935 Dunedin Cup winner, Tauramai. A. H. Eastwood rode Quite Able in a leisurely nine-furlong trial with Studio (K. Reggett) wide out on the course proper at Riccarton on Saturday. They were restrained from the start and took 2min 5 4-ssec for the distance and 54 sec for the last half mile. Studio will run against the hack stayers at the Dunedin Cup meeting, and if he manages to win there he may start in the Timaru Cup. The stablemates and Ellerslie candidates Braganza (M. V’ildermoth) and Cadiz (A. J. Stokes) sprinted the reverse way on the cutside of the course proper. They were sent out to run solo sprints, but Braganza loafed after breaking away ahead, and Cadiz finished alongside him. Cadiz dashed from the mile to the half mile in 48 l-ssec. J. C. Tomkinson will take Cadiz and Braganza north on Friday. For Trentham None of those to sprint the ordinary way on the course was more impressive than My Fair Lady Ridden by P J. Kempton, this smart hack recorded Imin 15 2-ssec and 51 2-ssec for the last half mile My Fair Lady will not race until the Wellington Cup meeting. The stablemates Corduroy (R. B. Taggart) and Coral Ring • (C. T. Wilson) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 17sec, the last four in 52 3-ssec. Coral Ring is one of the lightweights in the December Handicap on Dunedin Cup day and Corduroy is in the Novice Stakes. Sea Dance (G. W. Mein) and Telavista (W. Beck) sprinted half a mile in 51 3-ssec. The lightly-raced Questa Rose (N. Cowles) and an unraced Tsaoko-Dress Rehearsal filly showed good speed in running half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Questa Rose, a promising Isaac of York filly trained by G. R. Felling for Mrs H. J. East, will do her holiday racing at Washdyke. Galloping later in the morning when a strong south-westerly was blowing. King Lyn (P. J. Kempton) ran half a mile in 55 2-ssec. Most of the training was done on the plough, which gave fast footing. Most of the work on this track was done before a warm morning gave way to a blustery change from the south The stablemates Matauwhi (C T. Wilson) and Halla (R. W Gould) went away easily from the mile, but spurted home from the seven furlongs in Imin 29 4-ssec. Newmarket (J. Leach) recorded Imin 32 l-ssec. Smart Sprint Stradbroke (R. W. Gould) dashed over six furlongs in Imin 15sec, the last four in 49 3-ssec. Rayspar (W Beck) ran his six furlongs in Imin 16 2-ssed, the last half in 50 2-ssec. Brydone <C. T. Wilson) led Golden Howe (J. R. Currie) by half a length after running seven furlongs in Imin 32 4-ssec. Panam (K. Quayle) shaded his stablemate, Gladwyn (R. W Gould), after running six furlongs in Imin 16sec, the last three furlongs in 37sec. Unless there was false promise in this smart trial under a good weight, Panam should be an early winner. Portent (A. J. Stokes) and Harewood (P. J. Kempton) also recorded Imin 16sec for six furlongs, and 49 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Cheyenne (W Hanlin) sprinted five furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec, quickening for the last three furlongs in 37 2-ssec His next start is the Publicans’ Handicap at Wingatui, and he will probably run in the James Hazlett Gold Cup on the second day of the meeting. Going North Rustic (L. J. Ellis) and Lord Nikita (D N Hadfield) recorded Imin 19 3-ssec for six furlongs, and 39 2-ssec for the last three furlongs. A little later their stablemate. The Native (L. J Ellis), and Derailment (K. Reggett) brilliantly galloped half a mile in 48sec. . Rustic, Lord Nikita, and The Native will do their holiday racing in the North Island. They are booked to travel north on December 29. Gay Ribbon (R W Gould) and the unraced Polly Alonzo (A. H. Eastwood) led Burgos (W. Beck) by a length and a half finishing half a mile in 48 4-ssec. Burgos, the early favourite for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, runs lazily in training °nlly Alonzo is a two-year-old fillv bv Alonzo from Mary Dell G S Barr trains her for Mrs A M Cavanagh. Ruffle <P Graham) and Roa (W Beck) recorded Imm 1 4-ssec for five furlongs. Skylight (Miss M Jennings) followed m Imm 4 3 "St Link (D. N Hadfield) was going easily with a neck on Topa fp * Kempton) finishing seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec the last four furlongs in a 3 J-?;® 0 Last Link has the abili.y to win one of the distance hack races at Wingatui. Gould) started a little more slowly, but finished faster and .recorded Imin 17 3-5 sec. Surrend (Miss F. Kerr) and Saltash (A. J. Stokes) ran the last six furlongs of a mile in Imin 20 l-ssec. Keep Time (W. Beck) dashed over three furlongs along the back in 36 2-ssec, and Gabelle (C. McDonald) sprinted the last three of four furlongs in 37 2-5 sec. The two-year-old Puff (W. Hanlin) ran three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. At her second of two starts so far she ran third to the brilliant Commanding and Bridie O’Cally at the New Zealand Cup meeting.
