PONDOLAND UNREST

New Widespread Arrests (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PRETORIA, December 17. South African troops and police yesterday arrested 80 persons in troubled eastern Pondoland in a major operation which is still continuing. The chief spokesman for the Department of Bantu Administration (Mr Chris Pri'nsloO) issued a statement saying all the arrests were made as a result of investigations into the recent wave of murder, arson and “faction fights.” Unconfirmed reports reaching Durban today said the five prohibited areas of eastern Pondoland—Bizana, Flagstaff, Lusikisiki, Tabankulu and Mount Ayliff—resembled “an armed camp.” The press has been barred from reporting on the situation and the only news available is being issued through Government offices in Pretoria. About 400 shock troops of the Army’s mobile watch and between 200 and 300 police armed with special powers of arrest are believed to be carrying out the biggest round-up of rebel tribesmen since the virtual state of emergency was proclaimed on November 30. Light planes scour the countryside. Seven aircraft at Bizana fly to Durban and back every morning. There are police roadblocks at every entrance to the region and all permits are checked of those entering and leaving.
