MISS C. MONTGOMERY DIES
Pioneer Of Salvation Army Brigadier Miss Christina Montgomery, who died recently in Christchurch, was a pioneer of Salvation Army eventide homes for women. Australian born, Miss Montgomery. trained at the Salvation Army Training College in Melbourne about 50 years ago. Her first appointment in New Zealand was at Pakatoa Island, a home for women alcoholics in the Hauraki Gulf. For many years she was matron of a Salvation Army children’s home in Wellington. When Miss Montgomery came to Christchurch in the late 1930’s she was appointed matron of Sunshine Lodge, a. rescue home for delinquent girls. The lodge was later turned into a home for elderly women, and Miss Montgomery extended this work to another home in Office road. On her retirement in 1942 she was matron of both Sunshine Lodge and the Office road home. After her retirement, Miss Montgomery took an active part in the coal and blanket fund and in Salvation Army welfare work.
