HITCH-HIKING BY LONE WOMEN

Magistrate, Counsel Critical

(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, December 16.

Women who hitch-hike on their own on unfrequented roads are asking for trouble. This comment by counsel in the Magistrate’s Court in Timaru this morning was supported by the Magistrate. Mr N. M. Izard. S.M.

Before the Court for sentence was Michael John Sheehan, aged 21, who had admitted indecently assaulting a 33-year-old single Australian woman at Burkes Pass, in the Mackenzie Country, on December 10. The woman, who had been hitch-hiking from Fairlie to Mount Cook had accepted a lift in his car.

Sheehan was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.

“I could comment on the stupidity of girls who go hitchhiking on their own on comparatively deserted roads.” said Mr N. M. Mayman. “It’s just asking for trouble.” The Magistrate described the assault as an extremely unpleasant one. but said he agreed with what counsel had said. “Even a woman of 33, of mature years, is rather inviting assault travelling around the country like this,” he added.
