LICENSING ACT BREACHES
Club In Auckland Fined £l5O (Neu; Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. The Avondale Returned Services’ Club was fined £l5O by Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today on four charges of selling liquor without a licence. Leo Joseph Stock, aged 50, secretary and barman of the club, was fined £ 5 on each of five charges connected with selling the liquor and keeping it for sale.
The Magistrate said the charges were serious, particularly since this was the third time the club had appeared before the Court for this type of offence. All the charges were admitted.
Lyttelton Teacher Retires
Mr John Bell, a teacher at the Lyttelton Main School, has retired after 40 years’ teaching. After training at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. Mr Bell held positions on the West Coast and in the Wellington district, but since his return from overseas service in World War 11, he has done most of his teaching in schools in Christchurch and at Lyttelton. Mr Bell spent much time coaching Rugby football and cricket teams and also organised athletic tournaments. In later years, his main interest has been with the boys’ and girls’ horticultural clubs.
Presentations were made to Mr Bell at the school this week.
