ITALIAN MAN GAOLED
Hawked Fiancee As Prostitute (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, December 15, An Italian migrant went to prison for nine months today after losing his appeal against a conviction for living on the earnings of prostitution, practised in a van outside suburban espresso bars. Judge Moore, in General Sessions, told the man, Pasquale Salimbeni, aged 25, a farm labourer, of North Fitzroy, he could not imagine a more undesirable type of citizen in Australia. The Judge said there was no vestige of doubt that Salimbeni had hawked his fiancee, a 19-year-old girl, around suburban espresso bars as a prostitute. The Judge said photos of Salimbeni’s panel van showed it was specially furnished for the purpose and indicated the truth of evidence that it was driven by Salimbeni with the girl and up to four men at a time to dark streets for immoral purposes. “I cannot properly expreis the disgust the community must feel,” the Judge added. He said any normal young man would protect his fiancee rather than connive or concur in such behaviour.
