Threat To The Lakes
Sir,—Councillor Guthrey is leaving no stone unturned in an endeavour to have Harewood raised to full international status, thus encouraging “stopover” tourists to see the South Island. Mount Cook Air Services have been granted a licence for scheduled flights between Harewood and Te Anau. An official of Consolidated Zinc recently stated that work would begin to investigate tunnel site and dam site —no word of any investigation of alternative schemes, in spite of the assurances of Mr Nash that all alternatives would be fully investigated before any decision to raise the level of Manapouri was made. Of course, those assurances were given before the passing of validating legislation. Significantly, I do not remember any Consolidated Zinc official confirming those assurances. Overseas tourists will not be very interested in the South Island if our finest scenic lakes are to be defaced. Further action to save Manapouri is urgently needed.—Yours, etc..
