Town Hall Site
Sir,—Those of us who have worked for Town Hall Promotion, and surely all citizens who have contributed to its funds, must have been encouraged by the generous donation of £2OOO made by Mr and Mrs Jack Ferrier. The fact that Mi- Ferrier is a member of the Canterbury Club lends additional importance to the gift, and leads one to hope that negotiations between the club and the City Council may be opened in an amicable spirit at as early a date as possible. One should constantly bear in mind the vision of an imposing civic centre erected on the library site facing towards the river, with the permanent stone buildings of Canterbury College (the temporary wooden ones swept away) behind it, and then Rolleston avenue, the museum, botanic gardens, and Christ’s College beyond. A vision to stir the blood!—Yours, etc., C. L. MARTIN, Chairman, General Committee. Town Hall Promotion. December 16. 1960.
Sir, —The splendid gesture of Mr and Mrs Jack Ferrier is like a shot in the arm concerning the town hall malady which afflicts Christchurch. A great deal of quiet thinking has been going on as to what is the right solution to our problem. It has been hoped that the club members would view the (natter from the viewpoint of posterity and make the one generous offer necessary to solve our dilemma. Mr Ferrier has now given a lead—a courageous one—and the attention of the city is directed towards the group of gentlemen who surely will not miss this opportunity of doing something really worthwhile for our province.—Yours, etc., GRATEFUL CITIZEN. December 15. 1960. '
