King Baudouin and his Spanish bride slipped quietly away on their honeymoon from a celebrating Brussels tonight after the wedding of the year. The King of the Belgians and Queen Fabiola were married earlier in a glittering double ceremony. Brussels was delirious with joy, and thousands lined the streets to cheer the radiant bride, first Queen of the Belgians for a quarter of a century. In a telerecorded speech to the nation tonight, the Queen told the Belgians: “I think we understood and liked each other, you and I, from the outset . . . henceforth my heart and my life belong not only to my husband, but to you as well.” At the end of the solemn ceremony in the ancient cathedral church of St Gudule, guests near the door broke into clapping. The lofty cathedral was ablaze with colour from tapestries, thousands of roses and carnations, and_ the uniforms and magnificent gowns of a congregation of Kings, Queens, Princesses, and representatives of Heads of State filling its pews.
