FIRST FOUR SHIPS
110th Anniversary Of Arrival
The 110th anniversary of the arrival of the First Four Ships and the founding of the province of Canterbury will be marked at Lyttelton tomorrow by the flying of flags from the old time "ball station. The Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association will hold its major celebration—a garden party—on Saturday. The flags at Lyttelton will be flown by the Lyttelton harbour board. At 10 a.m. a red square flag, used in the days of sail to indicate that a ship had been sighted, will be hoisted, and about an hour later flags with the code of’ the name of the ship will be hoisted. The letters “N.A.8.H.” will be on the flags. This was the code for the Charlotte Jane. The flags will fly all day. The association’s garden party will be held in the grounds of Rangi-ruru School where an address on the history of the school buildings will be given by Miss B. Webb.
The intermediate section of the association will hold a barbecue at Hororata on Saturday evening. The junior section held a dance last Monday evening. “I regret the city does not celebrate our anniversary day by flying flags or some public ceremony,” said the president of the association (Mr J. L. Hewland), yesterday.
