CHRISTMAS PARTIES

Townswomen’s Guild. — Songs by the music circle and sketches by the entertainment circle helped to make up a varied programme ■when the St. Martin’s Townswomen's Guild held its Christmas party recently. Guests were welcomed by Mrs S. H. Shellock and included a member of the Dominion executive (Mrs C. Ironside) and the secretary of' the Christchurch Area Federation •(Mrs A. Thomson). Miss J. Elvine sang and Mrs H. Middleton recited. The Christmas cake t was made by Mrs D. Bennett and •iced by Mrs E. Bromley.

Mothers’ Union. — Members of the Holy Trinity Avonside Motehers’ Union were hostesses to neighbouring organisations and Mothers’ Union branches at their Christmas social afternoon recently. The vicar, the Ven. Archdeacon W. Merlin Davies, conducted the church service before the entertainment. Mrs H. C. L. Pruden, enrolling member of the branch, welcomed the visitors and announced that next November the branch would celebrate its 75th anniversary. The parish hall, gay with red and white roses and Christmas decorations, was a fitting setting for the Christmas play with its message of hospitality. It was presented by members of the Avonside branch. Mrs Cara Cogswell, conductor of the Avonside Mothers’ Union choir, which led the singing in the church, arranged the musical programme. This included songs by the choir, Mrs Cogswell and Mrs Eileen Williams, with Mrs Mabel Mason as accompanist, Mrs H. Coates organist and Mrs B. H. Williams, accompanist for the choir. An amusing hat parade competition was won by Mrs N.-Brown.

Beckenham-Huntsbury Garden Club.— Mrs Cara Cogswell entertained with vocal items at the Beckenham - Huntsbury garden club’s Christmas Party. She was accompanied by Mrs Mabel Mason. Humorous sketches were given by committee members. Gifts and a lucky dip were features of the party, and each member took away a gift for an elderly person. Community carol singing concluded the party. The president (Mrs H. D. Robson) presided.

North Christchurch Garden Club.— The Christmas party of the North Christchurch Garden Club was held recently at the home of Mrs B. O. Moore, St. Andrews Hill. Mrs A. McClure presided. Gifts of Christmas bon-bons were brought to be sent to the children at Templeton Farm. The afternoon was spent in singing carols and competitions Items were given by Miss V. Martin and Mesdames L. R Dulieu and K. A. Farr. The Christmas cake was cut by the patron, Mrs W. Balch.

N.Z. Founders’ Society.— More than 100 members and friends attended the Christmas party of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Founders’ Society, held recently at Deans Bush. Guests were welcomed by the chairman (Mr Alan Oakes). Games, races, and competitions were held, and gifts were given to each child
