WIVES SAIL WITH OFFICERS

Shipping Line’s New Policy

Housekeeping afloat and the opportunity to see the world are shared by three married couples. Captain C. W. C. Parry and Mrs Parry; Mr D. L. des Landes (chief officer) and Mrs des Landes, and Mr R. Gordon (chief engineer) and Mrs Gordon, on the freighter Maipura, which is expectpd at Lyttelton this week. The Maipura’s former limited passenger accommodation has been discontinued because of the increasing competition from air services, and the owners, the Brocklebank Line, have adopted a new policy of permitting senior officers to have their wives accompany them on various voyages.

For this concession no charge is made for the first time, and a shilling a month is paid by the company to each wife, who is classed as a supernumerary. For a second voyage, however, a charge of 10s a day is levied. This is Mr and Mrs Gordon’s second trip away from England, a previous one being to Calcutta and the United States. On this occasion the trip has been to South African and Australian ports, and so far Auckland and Wellington.
