DAMAGE TO CROPS

Green Peas At Halswell Flooded Effects of the prolonged wet weather and heavy rain are showing up markedly in the area bordering the hills between Halswell and Motukarara, and extending out as far as Lincoln township. Apart from heavy losses of hay which was baled before the weather changed, crops have been flooded badly. Green pea crops for both freezing and seed are showing bare patches in low lying spots where the waterlogged plants have died and rotted. One grower attempted to save his crop by operating his irrigation plant throughout the rain

pumping the accumulated water off the paddock, but the rain beat him. From Halswell round to Tai Tapu the area has had fully six inches of rain and the main drain alongside the Akaroa highway at Halswell is still running at a high level.
