MUSIC BURSARIES AWARDED
City Musicians Gain Two
Two Christchurch musicians are among the six in New Zealand who have been awarded music bursaries to enable them to study overseas. Three other bursaries have gone to Wellington and one has gone to Auckland.
One of the Christchurch musicians is Miss Anna F. Lockwood. Miss Lockwood was awarded a Royal Schools of Music scholarship earlier this year, and is at present studying at the Royal College of Music. The bursary of £2OO a year will supplement this scholarship. , Early this week it was announced that Miss Lockwood nad gained a bachelor of music degree with first-class honours at the University of Canterbury.
( Mr Christopher Gray, of Christchurch, was awarded a bursaiy of £4OO a year for two years. Mr Gray, who is 22, was educated at Christ’s College and the University of Canterbury, where he obtained a bachelor of arts degree.' He also holds the licentiate of Abe Royal of Music performers’ diploma. Mr David Sell, of Wellington, has been awarded a specialist course in school music methods overseas. Mr Sell, who is 30, was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and at the University of Canterbury, where he obtained his bachelor of music degree; He was appointed director of music at Hutt Valley Memorial Technical' College in 1953 and director of music at Mana College. WeMington, in 1958.
