Classical Dictum Obeyed
“The building obeys the classical dictum on high buildings stated by Louis Sullivan, famous American architect, at the time of the office building boom in Chicago in the nineties: ‘A building must have a base and a body and be terminated by the rool otherwise a high building be comes a series of office cells ex panding upwards and outward: without aesthetic order or com pletibn.’ “A strong visual base is achieve, by the freestanding columns facec with dark marble and with glass between them. The body of the building is a single concrete frame with vertically fluted bronze and vertically emphasised windows carrying the eye easily upward until the recession at th‘e sixth floor and the heavy overhanging roof slab arrest the eye.” —Mr P. J. Beaven.
