WORKING MEN’S CLUB OPENED

Complete Cost £17,500 . The St. Albans-Shirley Working Men’s Club was officially opened by Mr N. G. Pickering on Saturday afternoon. The cost, including land, building, and furnishing was £17,500. The building is on three acres and a half of freehold ground which will eventually be developed to provide bowling greens and a tennis court. The club has a membership of 700.. Built of concrete blocks, the clubhouse is 3000 sq. ft., and has a glassed veranda facing the Jun. It includes a recreation room, bar room, kitchen, library, committee room, • a secretary’s office, and conveniences for men and women. An elaborate and decorative metal grille can be pulled down to shut off the bar and add space to the recreation room after licensing hours. The concrete floors of both rooms are covered with linoleum tiles and are perfectly level to permit indoor bowls.

The modern kitchen, equipped with a dishwasher and an electric range, has a servery opening on to the recreation room. The library contains more than 1000 books given by members and friends. The committee room, which has a door opening to the library, will be used as a reading room when not in use for other purposes.
