MAORI MEETING HOUSE
Renewed Appeal For
Funds
There had been a dissappointing response to the appeal for funds for the completion of the Maori meeting-house at the Rehua Hostel. Mr H. P. Smith, chairman of the finance committee. said yesterday.
Ten thousand letters had been sent to business firms asking for contributions, but so far only £770 had been subscribed, leaving £3OOO needed. Mr Smith said the response was in sharp contrast to the £1470 contributed in about two hours by local and visiting Maoris at the opening of the meeting-house. The total cost of the building was about £14.000, Mr Smith said, and about £3OOO more was needed to have it debt-free.
His renewed appeal for contributions was commended by the Mayor <Mr G. Manning) and the president of the Christchurch Rotary Club (Mr D. V. Wilson).
