ATOM STRIKE FORCE

France Plans Development (N-Z. Press Association—Copyright) PARIS, Dec. 6. France today finally decided to provide herself with an independent nuclear strike force. The National Assembly accepted a special bill providing finance for a five-year programme to develop a French atomic strike force after rejecting a motion of censure against the bilk The bill has now become law. The motion of censure was presented by the Left and CentreLeft opposition groups, for the third time in succession, after one of the shortest debates on record. It lasted less than half an hour. Speaking just before the voting started, the Prime Minister (Mr Michel Debre) said: “We cannot have a six-nation atomic striking force because certain Governments who are members of the six-nation economic community cannot by treaty, or do not wish to, take part in such an, effort “We cannot have a seven-nation strike force with Britain because Britain wants her own atomic force. Britain’s national atomic defence policy is directed to creating a national force of interception.” Referring to co-operation with the United States, Mr Debre said that no conclusion valid for France could be drawn from the existing Anglo-American collaboration in this field.
