PARKING SERVICE FOR MOTORISTS
Junior Chamber’s
Appeal The Christmas fund-raising campaign being organised by the Christchurch Junior Chamber, to carry out its annual children’s gift-buying tour, opened yesterday when 25 members of the branch scoured the city’s main streets, placing threepences in expired parking meters and explanatory notes on car windscreens. By the end of the afternoon their efforts had resulted in 150 motorists being saved from paying parking fines, one of whom immediately presented her 5s donation to the organiser of the campaign (Mr J. L. Drummond) With promise of further contributions from the other 149 offending motorists, the Junior Chamber members will today continue their search through the city’s main parking areas, in the hope that further offenders will be moved to add their donations to this Christmas fund. Permission By Council Permission for the Christchurch Junior Chamber to conduct its appeal by placing stickers on motor-cars showing that a contribution had been made to parking meters had been given by the City Council, Cr. H. P Smith, chairman of the council’s by-laws committee, said last evening. “The purpose is a worthy one, and if someone is saved a fine that is all to the good,” he said. “The council doesn't want anyone to be fined, and we don’t mind who pays the 3d into the meter. •
“It all adds interest to the life in the community anyway,” he added.
The council’s permission was necessary, as without it it is an offence to place on any motor vehicle any circular, advertising matter, or dodger.
