Life-Saving SUMNER BEATS ST. CLAIR
Annual Club Contest The annual surf contest between the Sumner and St. Clair clubs was held during the few breaks of fine weather at Clifton yesterday afternoon. A strong offshore wind and a drift towards the estuary made swimming difficult on the homeward journey of the individual events.
W. Broughton (St. Clair), the manager of the New Zealand University team to tour Australia early next year, had a good win over A. McPhail (Sumner), also a University representative, in the open surf race. Broughton led all the way to win comfortably.
Sumner fillecj the next four places to win the teams’ race. Of the seven events, Sumner won four and St. Clair won three, giving Sumner the Goodfellowship trophy. Senior Six-man Rescue and Resuscitation.—St. Clair A (61 points) 1, St. Clair B (60.60 points) 2, Sumner A (57.30 points) 3. Paddle Board Relay.—Sumner A 1, St. Clair A 2, Sumner B 3. Open Surf Race.—lndividual: W. Broughton (St. Clair) 1, A. McPhail (Sumner) 2, R. House (Sumner) 3, K. McDonald (Sumner) 4. Teams’ race: Sumner 1, St. Clair 2.
