BIRD DAMAGE TO WHEAT.—Sparrows have caused heavy damage to trial plots of wheat varieties at the Crop Research Division this year, and in some cases the losses have been estimated at up to 80 per cent Although buffer zones of earlier maturing wheat were sown around and through the trials, the birds have been worse this year and their attack has been more prolonged.
